While the word genocide cannot be thrown around lightly, the Fulani herdsmen and Christian farming communities conflict has the markings and indicators of genocide.Whereas it was initially thought it was a conflict fueled by scarce land resources, this group of herders are Muslim fundamentalists seeking to islamitize Nigeria according to the Muslim Salafi ideology. And rid Nigeria of Christianity. To this end, they have resorted to the massacres of Christians.
Though minimal, the conflict is attracting international attention. The European Union in a report on January 16,2020 in condemning the killings noted “over 6000 Christians had been murdered by Fulani militants.” Indicators present opportunity for timely action. Rwanda and Kosovo are clear examples of how much devastation can happen and lives can be destroyed when intervention is a little too late. Nigeria is a ticking time bomb! How committed is the world to “Never Again?”
